THE IMAGE

James Dean sitting in the round window of his tiny apartment on 68th Street.
“I used daylight, and opened the window, which added another circle to the composition. Dean’s reflection in the glass and the marrying curves worked beautifully. I believe the results are some of my best compositions.”
- Roy Schatt

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Roy Schatt (1909-2002) was an American photographer who captured creative personalities from the 1950s on, using a ‘method’ approach and only natural light. Over his 60-year-long career, Schatt captured The Newport Jazz Festival, Long John Nebel & The Tonight Show, The World’s Fair, and The Actors Studio, where Schatt was named by director Lee Strasberg as the Official Photographer.
In the 1950s, Schatt developed a remarkable friendship with actor James Dean, who shared Schatt’s interest in photography and learned about art from the photographer. During the course of their yearlong relationship, Schatt captured the iconic ‘Torn Sweater’ series of James Dean’s portraits as well as personal moments of Dean playing the bongos at a party, pretending to steal candy from a newsstand or in the ABC studio between takes. Other photos reflect Dean learning how to photograph from Schatt, up until Dean’s tragic death in 1955 at 24 years old.
